All That Is Golden

Presented as part of the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspot programming, All That Is Golden was a community-based public art initiative organized by Scarborough Arts that celebrated the cultural richness, local businesses, and diasporic communities of Scarborough’s Golden Mile neighborhood.

For the project, Suzan Adélakun created an installation and exhibition of works presented within Barans Turkish Cuisine & Bar, transforming a local restaurant into a site of cultural storytelling, memory, and diasporic reflection. Through photography and visual narrative, the exhibition explored themes of migration, Yoruba mythology, femininity, and the interconnected histories of African diasporic communities.

Rooted in Scarborough, a place deeply connected to the artist’s immigrant upbringing and community organizing work, All That Is Golden functioned as both a public intervention and a celebration of diasporic visibility. By placing contemporary art within everyday community spaces, the project emphasized the importance of cultural storytelling outside of traditional gallery systems and highlighted the beauty, resilience, and multiplicity of Scarborough’s communities.
